Feeding crested geckos CGD is one of the things that makes them different from other pet reptiles. But it wasn’t always that way. Back in 2001, Matthew Parks started Pangea Reptile LLC. What began with breeding geckos grew into the producers of one of the most popular complete diets sold today. It is beloved by pet lizards and keepers alike, but what makes Pangea crested gecko food so popular?

Pangea CGD is made of wholesome ingredients which crested geckos love to eat and help them grow quickly. Unlike others, Pangea is not sold in big chain pet stores but instead found online and in specialty local pet shops. They sell six types of CGD (and one “treat”).

Comparing great brands can be difficult. Learn all about what is in Pangea’s CGD and what to expect when buying it.

Ingredients

Each of Pangea’s six complete gecko diets has different ingredients but shares an overall approach.

Every mix has 2-3 powdered fruits, and they are often the first two ingredients. Banana powder is the first fruit in five of the six, but apricot, mango, papaya, and watermelon are also present. The company notes that they made Pangea Gecko Diet With Figs & Insects without bananas for geckos that do not like that flavor.

Pangea uses multiple protein sources in each formula. Most use a combination of whey, milk, and egg proteins, but the Fig & Insect, Growth & Breeding, and Insects lines have mealworm, cricket, or black soldier fly larvae in them as well.

Every recipe uses both rice bran and xanthan gum as thickeners. The rice bran provides good micronutrients as well.

Most of what is left are vitamins and minerals to supplement the nutrients in the whole food components.

Overall, the ingredients make sense and don’t have a lot of filler. They are what you would want to feed your crested gecko.

Guaranteed Analysis

There are only slight differences with each Pangea product. Not surprisingly, the growth and breeding mix has the highest fat content, and the watermelon has the least. Each formula’s minimum crude protein is within one percent of the other.

While their packaging doesn’t include calcium content, their website does say their products are all “formulated with optimum levels of calcium and vitamin D3 for healthy growth and bone development.”

Pangea has the lowest protein and fat content compared to the other top brands.

The consistency across their blends is a strength. It allows keepers to switch flavors without worrying about any differences in nutrients.

Sizes & Price

Each formula of CRD comes in four sizes – 2 oz (1/8 lb), 8 oz (1/2 lb), 16 oz (1 lb), and 64 oz (4 lb).

Price varies slightly, but for most options;

  • 2 oz (1/8 lb) – $8.99 – $4.50/oz
  • 8 oz (1/2 lb) – $19.99 – $2.50/oz
  • 16 oz (1 lb) – $35.99 – $2.25/oz
  • 64 oz (4 lb) – $99.99 – $1.56/oz

The Growth & Breeding Formula is a bit more expensive.

  • 2 oz (1/8 lb) – $10.99 – $5.49/oz
  • 8 oz (1/2 lb) – $23.99 – $3.00/oz
  • 16 oz (1 lb) – $42.99 – $2.69/oz
  • 64 oz (4 lb) – $114.99 – $1.80/oz

There is a notable price jump between the smallest bag and the next size up, so start with the eight-ounce bag when possible. While it is natural to want your crestie to ‘taste test’ a new flavor before committing, it is good to know how expensive that is.

There isn’t a major “per ounce” cost savings between the middle two sizes, so choosing between those is about personal preference.

The four-pound bag saves a lot of money for those keepers who can use it fast enough. Once opened, the dry mix is good for six months at room temperature or one year if kept in a refrigerator.

Palatability

One of the strengths of the Pangea brand is how much geckos like it.

Thousands of online reviews point to how much their geckos prefer this brand over any other they’ve tried.

We feed our crested geckos watermelon, growth and breeding, and fig and insects. No one flavor works for all of them, but they are very loyal to the one they like.

Feeding Instructions

Mix one part powder with two parts water and stir. Add more powder or liquid as needed to get the desired consistency.

When ready, add the food to a small bowl and place it inside the habitat.

Conclusion

Pangea is the darling of the industry. Their CGD grew in popularity after Repashy changed its formula to something else desirable to many cresties. It has become one of the top sellers of complete gecko food.

Their blends are known for their pleasant smells, smooth texture, and broad acceptance by pet crested geckos.

Pangea is one of the more expensive brands of complete gecko diet. Still, keepers are willing to spend more money because they see results.
